MANSFIELD, TX – Hundreds of people were displaced early Wednesday morning after a crash ignited a major fire in Mansfield, CBS DFW reported.

The incident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 287 and Highway 360, where authorities said a vehicle struck a natural gas pipeline near an Exxon service station at about 1 a.m.

The crash sparked a fire that took the Mansfield Fire Department over two hours to bring under control. Families living within a one-mile radius of the fire were evacuated from their homes due to concerns over the natural gas.  They gathered for several hours at a local elementary school.

The driver of the vehicle involved was flown to Parkland Hospital with serious burn injuries.  There were closures on U.S. 287 and Highway 360 in both directions following the accident.

The driver was reportedly speeding and going in the wrong direction prior to the collision.
