MESQUITE, TX – An accident in Kaufman County late Monday night claimed the life of a woman and her young son, WFAA reports.

Police said 30-year-old Jennifer Young of Benbrook was driving a BMW west on Interstate 20 near High County Lane in Mesquite at about 11 p.m. when she collided with a Nissan sedan.

Young’s car became disabled as a result of the crash. She exited the vehicle with her 3-year-old son and started to walk away, but another vehicle was unable to avoid them and struck the woman and child. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

An 18-wheeler crashed into the two cars involved in the initial collision. The westbound lanes I-20 were shut down through the overnight hours for the investigation.
