How Bad are Texas Drivers?

Tailgating Car AccidentDo you live in Texas, whether it be Dallas, Fort Worth or any other major city? If so, then you have probably been in a car accident.

When it comes to driving, are we among the best?  The statistics look surprising.  Maybe even scary.  But when considered in light of the more populous areas like Dallas and Fort Worth, maybe we are not so bad.

Some Texas Car Accident Statistics.

Texas has about 28 million people as a total population.  But some of the statistics are pretty bad:

That’s pretty bad.

Analyzing the Statistics

Now, we can also look at total crashes by county. You’ve got the most populous counties as follows:

County Population # Crashes
Harris County 4,589,928 110,489
Dallas County 2,574,984 48,999
Tarrant County 2,016,872 30,805
Bexar County 1,928,680 48,289
Travis County 1,199,323 17,804

As a percentage of the population, that’s really not bad.

Now let’s take a look at the bottom five counties in terms of population versus crashes.

County Population # Crashes
Kent County 769 15
Borden County 633 25
Kenedy County 404 72
King County 289 25
Loving County 113 13

Loving and Kenedy had more than 10 percent of their population involved in crashes.

Why the Difference?

Maybe its because the more populous areas have access to taxi cabs, Uber and Lyft.  This may bring down the number of intoxicated drivers. Maybe road configurations and higher speed limits can also play a role?  Or maybe the presence of more law enforcement officials makes a difference.

Between the ages of 15 and 35, automobile accidents are disproportionally fatal to young men. Furthermore, while there are more urban than rural crashes, the rural crashes are deadlier and more numerous when taken as a percentage of the population.

It’s hard to say.  But looking at the statistics suggests that it is time to change our habits on the roadway.  Operating a motor vehicle is a privilege and not a right.  The rules of the road apply to everyone.
